Many travelers, especially those who flew, had a tough time during the recent holiday season. But one of the saddest stories was about a Chihuahua who celebrated her first birthday last week and was abandoned by her owner at the Des Moines airport.
Despite this sad situation, the little puppy is getting great care and will soon start searching for a new home.
The Animal Rescue League of Iowa found the puppy, named Allie, chained up on December 29th.
Reports say the dog’s owner tried to fly without a crate for the pet. They took the dog out of the airport and then went back inside alone to catch their flight. Later, Allie was found outside the airport.
The owner, Bigsen Charles, who is 24 years old, told Daily Mail that he left the dog behind to catch his flight to New Jersey because “I already checked in and didn’t want to miss my flight.” He thought the airline would provide a crate for the dog if he bought a ticket. He didn’t know he needed to bring his own crate.
Charles mentioned he didn’t find a home for the puppy because he thought someone else would take care of her.
According to Today, Allie’s owner handed her over to the Animal Rescue League of Iowa after a warrant was issued. Despite the situation, the dog is happy.
Tom Colvin, the CEO of ARL, described the dog as “very loving” and said she enjoyed the attention from airport staff who comforted her with a blanket and stayed with her until animal services arrived. She’s a friendly dog.
Colvin mentioned that Allie was lucky because she didn’t have to wait outside in the very cold weather from a few days before.
He also mentioned that Allie’s situation would get better soon because she would be put up for adoption and start searching for a permanent family.
“Allie will be ready for adoption after she gets spayed, microchipped, and receives any other needed veterinary care,” the ARL said in a statement to Today.
Investigations into the situation are happening now. Abandoning an animal is against the law in Iowa and can lead to a fine of at least $105 and up to two years in prison.
We’re glad to say that Allie is doing well and is excited to find a new home! It’s sad that someone would leave their dog alone like this.
