A new type of really special dogs that really love their human owners are called teddy bears. One of these dogs is Gertrude, a big dog called a Great Dane. Gertrude is famous all over the country for being very gentle and loving towards his owner, Bella.
When Bella first met Gerard, she was eleven years old and had a condition called Merquis Syndrome that made it hard for her to move around. When Bella’s mom, who was helping out with the project, introduced them, they instantly liked each other. Gilbert, who took on the role of Bella’s caregiver, helped her every day, like putting on her coat.
Bella talks about how important George is in her life. She says whenever she needs someone to help her, he is always there. You can see their strong connection from George’s actions; it seems like he needs Bella just as much as she needs him.
BarkPost, a popular website all about dogs, noticed George’s great service and gave him their special “Dog’s Best Day” award. This award is meant to give deserving dogs a really fun day. Videos of George and his cool friends have become really popular since then.
Bella’s mom says George has been with Bella every time she goes for her weekly enzyme replacement therapy at Boston Children’s Hospital. He’s also been there during her two recent short hospital stays. Bella feels more confident and normal because of George’s presence, even though she has a medical condition.
On October 14th, Bella will have surgery to fix her right foot, and George will be there with her. He’s been giving Bella not just comfort and help but also a feeling of belonging and confidence.
