Regarded as one of the most captivating insect species globally, Chrysina limbata captivates with its reflective silver sheen, allowing observers to glimpse their own reflections upon its surface. This breathtaking visual spectacle is attributed to thin film interference occurring within layers of chitin composing the beetle’s exoskeleton. These layers, varying in thickness, create a complex multilayer structure that interacts with light, resulting in a mesmerizing display of iridescence.
The allure of this silver beetle has long captivated collectors, who eagerly seek out pristine specimens, willing to pay significant sums, sometimes reaching up to $500 per beetle. However, its popularity soared even higher with the advent of social media, sparked by a series of captivating photographs shared by a Costa Rican enthusiast.
As Michael Farmer walked around his land, he caught sight of something shiny amidst the leaves of a guava tree. It sparkled under the sunlight, resembling polished metal. However, upon closer inspection, he realized that it was a living creature, crawling on the leaves.
I was astounded by its beauty,” Farmer shared with The Dodo. “I’ve never witnessed anything quite like it before. It resembled a mirror, reflecting flawlessly in the beetle. Truly, one of the most exquisite sights I’ve ever beheld.
After capturing a few pictures of the beetle using his phone, Michael Farmer carefully returned it to the guava tree leaf, where it promptly flew away. He looks forward to encountering another one soon. However, it’s disheartening to note that the population of Chrysina limbata beetles is decreasing, mainly because of habitat loss.
