Nature is amazing in many ways, and the rarer its creatures are, the more fascinating they become. Take this super rare white humpback whale, for example. Lots of people don’t even know they exist. So, imagine how lucky you’d feel to see one in person. It’s definitely a once-in-a-lifetime experience.
The big mammal known as Migaloo is probably one of the most famous animals in the world. Since he was first seen in 1991 by the Pacific Whale Foundation, he’s become a legend. Recently, this rare animal was seen again off the coast of Australia, near Sydney. “We were really lucky, Migaloo came up just a few feet away from our boat,” said Jonas Liebschner from Whale Watching Sydney. “It was an amazing sight!”
Migaloo got his name from an Aboriginal word meaning ‘white man’. He became famous because he’s one of the very few white humpback whales known to people. However, experts still aren’t sure why he’s white. They think he might have a condition called leucism, where he can’t make any pigment, or he might be a true albino. Migaloo is estimated to be 31 years old, but humpback whales can live up to 80 years old, according to Oskar Peterson from the Australian-based White Whale Research Centre.
